The annual show faced a lean period with drought like conditions across the district. Despite reduced entries the sheep section tallied 1,320 entrants, down from 1,440 last year, while the committee planned office expansions and pavilion improvements for future shows.
At Gulargambone Show the horses drew attention with fine light hackneys and heavy breeds while ponies won praise. The High Jump attracted two rivals Greg Timothy and Model Fort, both owned by K Chittick, with Greg Timothy winning. Sheep entries surged with 140 plus and a record 187 pennings, led by R. B. Meers for champion ewe in the grassfed class. A Meers duo also won prizes. The pavilion gains praise for improved space and school-work displays, and Vacola showcases drew crowds. Local exhibitors like A E Jones and A W Bolger feature prominently among many others.
The 1938 Gulargambone Show featured opening ceremonies led by A W Yeo MLA with many visitors from Coonamble and Winchedgombe who praised the Secretary Mr Kingaley and the association. Contests covered include livestock, draught animals, horses, sheep merino shows, and numerous sections with prize listings and gate receipts. the event highlighted improvements in sheep exhibits and irrigation plans for NSW, amid community support from local clubs and the County Women’s Association.
Mr A W Yeo M L A awarded cups to winners including Little’s Dip Cup to G R B Meers for Sunny Time, McWilliams Wine Cup to H D Mocs Collie, and Bonnington Cup to J and K Mears Collin. Meers brothers dominated the Sheep Section as Yeo praised merit and anticipated future showcases.
About 100 couples attended the Ball-100 show with Arm strongs full orchestra playing. The floor remained lively until Saturday morning as couples danced continuously. Mrs R H Baker catered a well regarded supper with abundant hot mince rolls and attractive tables. Visitors came from Gilgandra Tooraweenah Eumungerie Dubbo Coonamble and nearby centres.
The awards section lists SECTION A horses with Blood Stallion, Blood Mare, and Blood Colt or Filly categories and the winning names A E Jones B H Fisher A BE Jones and A B dance. SECTION B draught stock grants Best Draught Mare and Champion Draught Mare with winners C B Brown A Strang and Brown.
