In Gilgandra plans to alter and enlarge the District Hospital face delays after cost concerns. Directors reviewed proposals ranging from £9000 to about £5893 with completion contingent on government-approved plans and a fresh layout to add two beds and a new operating theatre.
Anodiata members of the Gil andra Golf Club opened the season with a 12 hole aftern oon event. Mrs Varcoe welcomed new members and praised old ones as 1998 promised an enjoyable season. Mrs Holmes and Mrs Dunstan won the afternoon foursome with 61 44 87, others included Mrs Christie and Mrs Verdi 18 1 3 45, and more. A trophy donation was announced by Mrs Alexander, with a sealed date trophy for best score on that date. May and June tee times and an afternoon tea roster were set.
The Gilgandra branch held its monthly meeting at the Memorial Literary Institute with officers and many members present. A report on the recent Sydney conference by Miss Rendell was read and thanked, and a donation to the Pioneer Women's Memorial Fund was approved.
Gilgandra defeated the visiting Emmingerie team 20 to 7 to claim their second victory of the season. Officials praised strong support from fans and noted no heavy costs for paid players, with budget balance anticipated to clear last season's debts. Gilesn dra scored three tries unconverted as Gilgandra improved after halftime, while Emmungerie added one converted try. Local players M Ballantyne Jo Wilson and M Morel starred, with N Noonan and D Graham among those showing promise.
Entomologist Mr. Gurney notes a grasshopper outbreak across Gileag ira, Coonebarathran and Dul fo Aist with grasshoppers found on vegetation and some nymphs not yet hatching. State entomologist visited the district to assess the situation and advise control measures.
Gilgandra Branch of the Red Cross Society held a meeting at the War Memorial Institute on Saturday April ay with Mrs Varcoe presiding and seventeen members present. New members were welcomed and Misa Beck was elected honorary secretary. A donation of 420 was authorised to head office, and Tin Hat Day is set for 28 May with a street stall the same day. The next general meeting will be at the Institute on 25 June at 9 pm with full attendance desired.
An event titled Movie Ball featured Abseys and many attendees including 110 couples. The hall was crowded and the evening included performances by Seoh and Gilgands Wyle with a long list of participants. The gala supported community causes and a portion of the evening noted convivial competition among attendees. Local winners include H Campbell and F Tybbiey with six over par. Meantime Mendooran resident Monk dies aged 27 with funeral held at the Methodist portion of Mendooran cemetery.
The Coonamble Diggers union considers a buffet supper and late dance with the Lorna Lance Orchestra as part of their events. A supper date—August—was discussed along with appointing a dance committee. Sympathy was offered to the secretary on his loss.
