Old Pioneer Harry Irvin recalls Dubbo district life

An 85 year old pioneer, Mr Harry Irvin of Tooraweenah, shares memories of early Dubbo district days. He describes shepherding 1000 sheep at age eleven, native dogs, abundant wildlife, mail by Cobb and Co, and transport from Mudgee to Dubbo. He settled at Nullen in 1908 and reflects on Tooraweenah’s growth from a three-run settlement to a community with hotels and bridges.

Macquarie Group Council Meeting in Coalbaggie Hall

About 70 delegates and friends attended the Macquarie Group Council meeting of the C W A at Coalbaggie Hall. The day featured tea and lunch hosted by Terramunga, with visitors from Eimungerie and Coboco branches, and a presentation of life membership to Mrs Fagan for long service. Preparations were made for the Sydney conference, and expenses for delegates and officers were outlined. A resolution for the next Dubbo meeting considered abolishing foreign schools and mandating English schooling for aliens after two years residence. Donations totaling £145 reduced a £70 overdraft. balance stood at £60. Younger members from Tulbragur and Balladoray were welcomed to assist their parent branches.

Obituary: Leonard Miles Norton 42 in Tooraween district

Leonard Miles Norton aged 42 died last week in Gi gandra District Hospital. Born at Young he resided in Tooraweenon for eight years. Survived by brothers Andrew William Augustus Thomas John Joseph and C Wright and sister Mrs Les Friend all of Cowra and Coonabarabran. Funeral held Thursday in Catholic cemetery with Rev Eviston officiating. arrangements by A H Rose.

At a War Memorial Institute meeting the Gilgandra Jockey Club approved donating two guineas from Boxing Day profits to the Red Cross Society. The secretary pledged four guineas of salary. The balance sheet was adopted and the group thanked the secretary for his conduct and presentation.

Archbishop Gilroy Dr Norman Thomas Gilroy D D Co adjutor Archbishop succeeds to the See of Sydney. Born at Gleb 44 years ago he worked in the postal service as telegraph operator in country towns. He served in the Great War and was at Gallipoli as a wireless operator. After returning to Australia he studied for the priesthood and rose rapidly in ecclesiastical rank. Prior to Sydney he was Bishop of Port Augusta SA.

Ford Dealers Meet at Dubbo Western Zone Conference

The Ford Motor Company Western and North Western zone conference met at Dubbo with dealers from many towns. Townsend represented Gilpanora and a daylong session covered dealer matters. A Castlereagh Hotel dinner, led by S Brain, featured toast to The Ford Motor Company and remarks from E Fowler and H Rankin. The sales manager in NSW outlined company support to strengthen dealer relations and mutual benefits. Fleming received recognition for office assistance amid staff changes.
