A Good Investment by Gilgandra Council on Undertaking

The Gilgandra Shire Council reports that in ten years under council control light and power charges fell and the plant’s net debt at 1937 end stood at £1301 17 4. Since 1928 the project expanded from 140 hp to include Crossley and National engines, multiple dynamos, filtration, air tanks, and expanded mains, with total outlay near £10,000.

Fire scare saved by chemical extinguishers in Gilgandra

Gilgandra Fire Brigade quickly responded to a fire in large wooden buildings owned by L Semmler and used by J Donovan. Two chemical extinguishers subdued the flames after a 10 39 p m alarm, with strong wind threatening spread. Only minor damage to a post and nearby flooring occurred, keeping wider destruction at bay.

Youth Drowns Near Box Ridge Sawmill

Arthur William Bentley aged seventeen son of Richard Bentley owner of Box Ridge sawmill drowned in a dam at Gumin Station on Tuesday afternoon. Neal Petri tried to save him but failed. Body recovered about 1 hour 20 minutes later. water nine feet deep. Bentley buried at Parkes after moving from Gulargambone.

Crowded Railway Ground Hosts Busy Local Cycling Meet

A large crowd attended at Railway Recreation Ground for a Sunday cycling program led by the Cyril Myera Cup three mile race won by A Krohn from W Walker. L Walker took the Mug's Race while M Madewick captured the Juvenile Quarter Mile Handicapped event. The 1 mile Scratch Race went to C Collison, with H Krohn and R Wilkinson in close order. Eight races total gave local riders vital practice ahead of next week's club sports at the Show Ground. An incident saw W Walker ride with handlebars detached yet finish safely.

Wedding Bells for Olive Minnie Warren at St Brigid's

Olive Minnie Warren, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Warren of Milpa, wed at St Brigid's Church on Wednesday last. The bride wore a parchment Ince frock with medici collar and basque, carried a bouquet of lilies and narcissi, with a coronet of orange blossoms, and was supported by bridesmaids including Veronica Warren. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. O'Donnell, followed by breakfast at the Central Cafe and a reception at Bondi. The couple planned an extended overseas tour after the festivities.

Gilgandra Shire Council disclosed to Dr. Semmler that since 1932 a total of £1718 19s 4d has been spent on the Park. Expenditures included maintenance, repairs, and improvements funded largely by Emergency Relief Work schemes with government provision covering some costs.

Trees Destroyed Spark Council Report in Castlereagh Street

A January council report notes three trees within Castlereagh Street tree guards were uprooted on 31 December. Police informed, inquiry continued. clerk Mr J B Seord stated damage suspected deliberate and names of suspects were sought as officers prepared charges. Protests over the vandalism were raised by Cr Christie.

A Gilgandra boy, R P Hitchen J P Town Clerk of Newtown, completes his first year in office after acting from June 1998. He aided the re modelling and reopening of Newtown Town Hall and helped raise funds during the Mayoral term. He serves as Hon Tras of the Mayor's Relief Fund and assists the 160th Anniversary Celebrations.

Andersons Sheds Burns In Severe Fire At Bearbong

Mr. G. W. Anderson of Ker Ringall Bearbong suffered heavy losses last Wednesday when several sheds on his property burned totally. The blaze destroyed machinery seed wheat and hay including a press two stand plant and engine and other farm gear. About 199 bales of hay and five stacks of hay totaling 100 tons were consumed. most contents were uninsured.

Coonamble Solicitor Shot Found Dead In Gar age

Hector T Kort, 87, a longtime solicitor in Coonamble, was found dead in his garage Sunday morning by his son returning from church with family. A large head wound and a shotgun beside the body are noted, with no clear motive given. He leaves three sons and two daughters, wife previously active in the community.

Dual success at Mudgee Championship Tennis Tourney

Gileandra residents report a strong showing by Mrs. D. Fitzsimmons known as Mise Edna Fenton daughter of Mr and Mrs A Teoten of Lower Miller Street She won the ladies singles with doubles at the Mudgee Championship Tennis Tourney and reached the mixed doubles final partnered by her husband The women's singles final was hard fought with Fitzsimmons winning after a tough rally sequence and a first set loss she recovered to win the match 1 2 and 1 in a display praised as some of the best on the courts.
