Geraldton protests over valuation led water rate concerns
The Geraldton Chamber of Commerce and the Geraldton Retail Traders Association filed protests at a council meeting against raising annual property valuations rather than the rate in the pound. Mayor Dr J McAleer defended the Municipal Corporations Act and explained that valuations were revised due to postwar constraints and rising costs, with revenue growth limited and driven by new and improved properties. He noted re valuations by the Taxation Department in 1948 increased revenue by about £2,000, to be absorbed by higher costs and needed services. The council agreed to reply to the protesting bodies, while some members suggested ratepayers lodge concerns with the Water Supply Department over water charges.
