Painswick Clipping Ceremony Preserves A Quaint Parish Rite
In Painswick a Sunday afternoon clipping ceremony honors St Mary’s parish church. Children form a circle around the building, sing the clipping hymn, and receive a small boon afterward. The ritual, dating back 51 years, blends pagan roots with Christian tradition.
