Japanese Shipbuilding Shows Growth in Steamers and Subsidized Lines

A British consul general report from Yokohama notes 220 shipyards in Japan, down nine from last year. The yards produced 77 steamers totaling 24,479 tons and 147 sailing vessels of 11,097 tons, with a drop in sailing vessels from 1910. Total Japanese shipping now includes 2515 steamers of 1,233,909 gross tons plus stock vessels. Four steamers, 15,817 tons, were completed under shipbuilding encouragement laws. Subsidized lines number 24, serving global routes except the Atlantic, with future plans to add medium freight and passenger ships as the Pausua Canal nears completion. The canal could shift Japanese activity to the Atlantic, influencing plans of European and American trade routes. Developments hinge on canal charges and final strategies awaiting full canal terms.
