In Calcutta February strong criticism of the Government of India Bill was voiced by Indian princes at a meeting. They oppose the bill as a breach of agreements from round table conferences, arguing it impinges on state sovereignty, governor general powers, and federal finance. The Maharaja of Patiala declared he would not accept the bill as is and urged substantial alterations to protect princely privileges.

Thomas Mellon, pastoralist of Won gawal Station, was charged with supplying liquor to three Aborigines, Tommy Jones, Tassie, and Charley. He pleaded not guilty. Jones testified he had worked at Wongawal twenty years and liquor was given after hard days work and on Christmas Day. Mellon admitted giving the natives a small measure of whisky or beer after work but claimed it never caused intoxication and that about 25 natives were present. The magistrate imposed a fine of £50 for three offences, with 150 days imprisonment in default, plus £22 costs, noting the offence had persisted for years. A charge of evincuating with a between August last year and February this year was dismissed. The Chief Protector of Aborigines and counsel Burgess attended.
Agents landed 400 cattle with mixed quality and weight, mainly from the Midlands and South West. Yarding lacked last week’s quality though all classes were represented. Buyers attended but country demand was limited. Prices ranged for bullocks and cows with several firms listing consignments: Elder Smith 310 cattle, Dalgety 83, Westralian Farmers Lil 35, Goldsbrough Mort Co 26.
The Midland Junction market on Wednesday showed mixed quality with lambs and sheep not meeting last week’s standards and the market easing slightly. Price quotations covered wethers to ewes and lamb weights with volumes reported for cattle and pigs, noting improved competition but overall softer demand than prior week.
