Lord Mayor Elected in London Guildhall Ceremony
At Guildhall yesterday about 3000 Liverymen gathered after divine service to elect a Lord Mayor for the year. The Recorder urged duty to public peace and the electors to choose well, amid applause as Sawbridge and Sawbridge declared. The Sheriff’s opinion led to John Sawbridge being named Lord Mayor. Sawbridge’s speech pledged fidelity and readiness to defend the city’s rights, and he announced receipt of a letter from John Hancock in Philadelphia.
