Charles Tocun reports that on August 22 in South Carolina the Virginia General Assembly voted to erect an elegant marble statue at public expense to honor the memory of Governor Lord Botetourt.
Lord Lieutenant opens Parliament here with a finance focused speech. He notes revenue shortfalls, large grants, and calls for further supplies to cover two years of government costs. Oaths taken for Hillsborough and Lord Dartrey seated. Dublin street cleansing bill approved. A Westmeath house fire kills Mason Wilson, his wife and five children. sister severely burned.
This morning a large Dutch ship broke moorings and fouled several vessels in Weymouth harbor causing damage to the new bridge. Three stone-laden ships sunk near the Draw bridge. Leeds reports heavy trains this week caused mud and floods. rivers rose sweeping away ricks of peace and beans from Castleford.
Fragments show wind direction NW, dated October 16, with references to persons or place names and competing names. Details are incomplete, making full event unclear.
Arrivals list numerous ships docking at Dublin ditto and Yarmouth road including Minerva from Madeira Duke of York from Africa and Dominica and Neptune from Africa with other vessels from Cadiz Oporto Jamaica Georgia and Newfoundland. Departures mention Amity for Sixth Carolina and several vessels sailing for Hudsons Bay Quebec and Cadiz amid a busy port scene.
A London Gazette style item notes yesterday the Dowager Duchess of Bedford attending the Levée at St James's for the first time since the Duke's death. It lists naval movements from Portsmouth and Plymouth, wreck reports from Spithead and the Humber, a marriage treaty involving Peter Beckford and Lady Almeria Carpenter, and various society notices including births marriages and deaths.
An antique notice lists several deaths and then promotes Hemet the dentist claiming Essence of Pearl prevents early tooth decay. It urges care of children, cites age two as first tooth set, and announces sales by Bayley in Cockspur Street and Price opposite the India Houses Leadenhall.".
