Lenox and fleet resow on Spanish vice-admiral action
An extract from a Lenox dispatch recounts the October 1 engagement off Havana between Admiral Knowles’s squadron and a Spanish fleet. The Lenox, alongside the Tillbury Warwick and Canterbury, pressed the fight while Cornwall broke from the line. Despite heavy exchanges and Cornwall’s loss of topmast, the British pursued the disabled vice-admiral’s ship toward Havana. nightfall, a fire on the Spanish ship, and a peace conclusion ended the chase with uncertain spoils.
