Debate on London Printers warrants tests legal limits of the House

In the House of Commons on Monday the Printers case sparked a wide debate on the legality of the Speaker's warrant and the power of the House to commit individuals. Alderman Oliver and Sawbridge argued about four elements of a valid warrant while critics urged adherence to Magna Charta principles and the law. The hearing included sharp exchanges among Lords George Germain Sackville Elliott and others, ending with an adjournment and motions regarding attendance of the Lord Mayor and Alderman Oliver.
