Death of King of England and secret Catholic rites
An account from February 1685 describes the dying English king's illness and the urgent effort by the Duke of York to secure a Catholic profession for the king. A priest was smuggled in, absolution and extreme unction granted, and the king pledged to declare Catholicism if he recovered. The scene in Whitehall involved bishops, priests, and wary courtiers as the succession began to unfold.
