Short and the Newcastle Race Fiasco at County Durham
Extract from a letter from Hexham recounts a Newcastle race dispute with a Northumberland farmer wagered twenty guineas. Short, mounted on a green velvet outfit, arranges the match, then ensures the horse crosses the Tyne to Durham, citing parliamentary law forbidding matches under fifty pounds. Also notes naval movements, stock prices, and financial listings of the day.
