Fire suspect grilled at Secretary of State office in Portsmouth

Postscript notes a man examined at eleven o'clock for allegedly setting Portsmouth dock ablaze. He claimed voluntary appearance and said he was hired by a French agent. The piece links the Portsmouth fire to a Petersburg blaze blamed on incendiaries, hinting at wider French malice. It comments on Windsor pageantry, royal reception, and public figures amid political tension. It mentions Wilkes, Horne, Junius letters, and public loyalties.

Ants and Humidity: A Fascinating Domestic Experiment

The author details observations on ant dimen sions and behaviour, noting how ants cluster around earth moisture and how dampness sustains their brood. He describes relocating a nest to a kitchen shelf, witnessing vigorous activity then decline as humidity dropped, and muses on ant eggs seen under a microscope. The piece ends with a philosophical reflection on nature's wonders.

Contested writings spark warnings and public discourse

The periodical squabble centers on Junius styled author figures with Howe and Horne amid political divisions. A fresh Bill of Rights debate, price hikes by butter dealers, and a second rendition of Dido at Foote's theater illuminate a city scene of legal shifts, arts criticism, and local crime justice updates.

Public Rebuttal to Anonymous Claims About Sir John Murray

A letter from Robert Murray defends Sir John Murray against anonymous reports of his insanity and removal. Murray narrates that a constable, two sons, and two servants calmly conveyed him from an inn, noting no violence or public alarm. He asserts the public was misled by adversaries seeking to profit from Murray’s weakness, and cites Dr. Battie’s care as confirmation of his humane treatment.
