Plunder and mismanagement plague the Company’s finances
A lengthy letter depicts the Company as deeply burdened by debt and lavish official plunder. Investments rely on English goods revenues while domestic borrowing climbs, with eight percent interest and a looming famine reducing incomes. The writer warns of wars, Marattos, and Suja Dowla threatening settlements, while costs for fortifications and cantonments soar and civil servants amass fortunes at the Company’s expense.
