Feathers Tavern Society and English Church Critique

A letter to a friend in Rome criticizes the Feathers Tavern Society as weak and unlikely to succeed. It praises the Protestant king and Church of England, notes harmony with Parliament, and warns against spurring unrest. The writer cites the Confesional and a letter by An Old Maid, then reflects on enthusiasm spreading within the Church and cautions against reckless zeal. An appended note mentions Professor Lewin and a violent incident abroad, plus impending inspections and a Vienna-Venice boundary commission.

London life and politics and society noted in brief

The report reels through petitions to the House of Commons and Lower House on taxes and Boston trade, a Taunton election hearing, and a pension contest over Chelsea out pensions. It covers a new writ for Worcester, a Hamburg poisoning rumor, and Paris marriage chatter. Social diversions at Good Tree’s masquerade, a Pantheon concert crowd, and Lord T. in disguise mark the night. Lent preaching listings, prices at Leadenhall and Whitechapel markets, and a Oswestry marriage are noted alongside Birmingham fever death and London high water forecasts.
