The Ugly Philosopher in a London Cellar
In a fragment from a continuing tale, Lemuel the philosopher and a companion descend into a grim London cellar tavern. The scene blends grotesque description of Lemuel’s appearance and the squalid, smoky dining room crowded with grotesques and hungry patrons amid the noise of a city at play.

The Philosopher and the Subterranean Kitchen Tale
An excerpt follows a narrator and a philosopher over meals and reflections on wealth and economy. The philosopher extols frugality while criticizing excess, and the narrator, after portions of indulgence and a failed attempt at philosophical proof, parts ways to return to Lucy’s quarters in the city.
