Fire devastates Galata and floods Constantinople with ruin
From the London Gazette March 4 report a catastrophic blaze in Galata near the Tophana gate burned 2500 houses and shops for forty hours under a fierce northerly wind. The afflicted were mainly Greeks Armenians and Jews and many died from the cold as a heavy snow fell. two other fires started that night, with claims of incendiaries.
