Telegraphic briefs note C. J. Brydges died Saturday while visiting a hospital and his funeral Tuesday was billed as the biggest in the city’s history. The report also mentions Davin pressing the Minister of Justice to cut Torrens title costs in the Territories and arguing the abstract can be dispensed with. the issue is under review.
Ottawa February 20 Commissioner Herchmer’s report to the House urges improvements in liquor laws and notes the police force is in fine condition. Discipline is high, few punishments, men well drilled, but many desertions due to inability to purchase discharge. After two years service, men should be allowed to buy discharge. 55 reengagements recorded. Total force strength is 74.

A Ottawa cable in the New York Herald London edition reports the Liberal party pushing for independence. The dispatch calls it the first shot in a campaign to loosen the British tie and curb Dominion links to Britain.
Sir Charles Tupper, at Loxpox, plans to depart for Canada to provide evidence in the arbitration between the government and the C P R. Asked about succeeding Sir John A. Macdonald, he suggests a French Canadian would best serve Canada due to loyalty to the mother country.
Incorridible O'Brien was arraigned in Tralte for trial. He refused to apologize for calling Col Turner a sneak in court and declined to defend himself. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment, totaling ten months with the current term.
The Batchewan officers report inquiries from half breeds who fled after the rebellion asking to return with their names and bring in farming tools duty free. Ottawa replies that after a sufficient absence they may return as ordinary settlers and import implements without customs duties.
Ottawa reports the railway committee approved the Alberta Railway and Coal Company's bill. Sir Alexander Galt says the firm has power to build into Montana, with capital arranged and work to start in May. A contract for two hundred tons of coal to Montana already exists, and the gauge on the Galt road will be widened.
Rep Butterworth of Ohio introduces a resolution to invite Canadian Parliament members and provincial premiers to visit the U S around May with an appropriation of 150000 dollars for entertainment and a 75 member HouseSenate reception committee. Wandelings include a New York dynamite incident and local political disputes over temperance and Ontario rail subsidies.
