Trooper Trickey Dies on the Veldt

A cable from Cape Town reports the death of Thomas Trickey of the South African Constabulary from enteric fever on February 3. His father Henson Trickey of Beulah Manitoba and Kincardine Ontario residents Egan Hodgekinson and Robert Thomas Stobo also died of the disease. Trickey had served as a bugler in D division Northwest Mounted Police at Macleod Post before enlisting in South Africa.

Kitchener Reports Large British Move Against DeWet

From Wolvehoek Lord Kitchener telegrams a major British column advance to trap General DeWet. The line extended from Frankfort to Kaffirkop with outposts fifty yards apart. DeWet fled with some men and cattle after a night melee, while the British suffered ten casualties and reported Boer losses of 238 killed wounded or prisoners plus many horses and cattle. An Irish ball meeting is set for Feb 16 at the Macleod Hotel.
