Special to the Gazette in Ottawa reports the Pomeranian with the Western Rough Riders passed Cape Verde Islands yesterday morning and is all well.
The Telegraph reports from Spearman's Camp dated February 6 describes a second day of fierce battle with Boer shells on the bivouac near Doorn Kloof. Allied gunfire silenced much of the enemy's artillery while the Durban Light Infantry and King's Royal Rifles led a successful charge to clear the hill. Prisoners were reportedly taken as the action continued toward Vaalkrantz.
Report says Boer forces suffered severe casualties in trenches with some dead described as Kaffirs. After two defeats the British aim to press forward with renewed vigor, hoping Buller’s assault on the kopjes will relieve Ladysmith within a week.
London reports ongoing movements around Ladysmith with Buller advancing across the Tugela and the British forces expanding to 25 more infantry battalions. Communications cite prisoner releases, aerial heliographs, and reinforcements as Canadian volunteers prepare for Ottawa deployment.
The Strathcona contingent known as Strathcona's Horse is nearly formed and will depart Canada for Cape Town within the month. The Halifax to Cape Town voyage lasts about a month, so arrival is expected around April.
