A Western planted gum tree specimen is shown in a shop window. The branch grows from a tree grown in age and is about ten feet high with several similar stems. Flowers appear four to five years after planting with a pixie cap shaped operculum and a red filament stamen up to five inches wide. Blooming usually occurs in January, though one flowered twice in six months. The displayed flower is smaller than typical.
Eleven Duplin youths tested by Instructor Alan Frost for the Forbes Aero Club scholarship show fair aptitude for flying. Two will face a Parkes selection board next Friday, with the winner to be announced at the air pageant in Parkes on Saturday featuring Tiger Moths Mustang demonstrations and joy flights over the town. An aero club dinner is planned for Thursday June 3 at the Parish Hall with president to speak on autogiros.
Touring the week end, several serious football accidents occurred at the games in the district. Jim Davey of Gereema broke his right leg and was admitted after ambulance transport to District I Hospital. In the same match A Bishop of Elizabeth Street and W Downes of Dowling Street sustained elbow, rib and ankle injuries and were admitted to Porbes District Hospital.
The Danish Consul Mr. Henning Hergel and Mrs. Hergel toured Forbes with Mrs. Hergel, receiving a packed civic reception in the Council Chamber hosted by Mayor Comridge. Local groups including the Rotary Club and the Country Women's Association hosted engagements, and delegates praised Forbes hospitality as the visitors planned a broader tour of the district.
Forbes Rotary Club entertained visitors at Parkh Hall with the Danish Consul Mr. Hergel as guest speaker. He praised Rotary aims, spoke on Denmark's history and industry, and urged cross cultural understanding as a key to world peace.
A large number of Forbes youths will join others from Eugowra Parkes Peak Hill Dubbo and surrounds for a touch camp and Anglican youth events. St Johns A A members contributed to the Church of England Homes War Memorial Appeal while Padre Harry Thorpe prepares in Melbourne for society camps and conferences before returning to Bathurst to finalize Orange camp plans in June.
A Forbes gathering hosted Mr and Mrs Hergel with Dr and Mrs Vout and others, celebrating Danish culture and the Rotary Club in Forbes. Mrs Hergel described Denmark’s social system, farming, and low child mortality, praising Danish education and equality as the group enjoyed a Danish national anthem and God Save the King.
