An editorial argues democracy faces threats from Communism and imperialistic moves abroad. It warns democratic states risk corruption, one party rule, and weakened institutions if they ally with socialist forces or fail to uphold liberty and social ideals.
George Edward Orman died suddenly before midday while seeking treatment in Sydney. He was a former owner and prominent figure in business with ties to John Meagher and Co. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. The body is prepared for burial and a funeral mass will be held at St Lawrence Church after a Catholic service at the cemetery.
