Hell Ship Rakyo Maru and the Burma to Saigon Trek
A POW account recounts the Burma time in Thailand and a brutal transfer to Saigon aboard the Rakyo Maru later renamed Hell Ship. Overcrowded holds, scarce food, malaria and dysentery, and brutal Japanese guards marked the nine day to 11 day voyage. A torpedo attack near Singapore left several ships burning as survivors struggled to reach life rafts and food amid chaos and fear.
