Pageant winds halt Mustang at Parkes air show

Parkes central western acre club hosted an air pageant for Air Forbes Week with clubs from Parkes Broken Hill and Narromine and about ten aircraft. A glycol leak grounded the Mustang. Wirraway and ground crews still delivered strong displays despite 28 mph wind and 65 mph gusts at 300 feet. Guests toured the officers’ mess, Forbes support aided the event, and plans emerge for a Melbourne Anglican Youth Leaders conference in May plus a Homes and Youth Sunday on October 4.

Liquor License for Bowlers Approved by Licensing Court

The Licensing Court chaired by J B Beabie considered granting a liquor license to the Bowling Club after July 1. Scoble endorsed the Bowling Club for its larger membership 179 versus 49 at the Golf Club, better facilities, year round and night play, and more inter-town matches. He suggested deferring the license to July 1 to reduce fees. Advocates were E Palmer for the Bowling Club and Belby for the Golf Club. Spirit merchants licenses were also granted to Regtmorid on fons Pty Ltd and G A Colmes under conditions.

Forbes racehorse Catlow destroyed after toe injury on track

The refused offer of £106 was part of a sad accident as Catlow, a six year old gelding bred from Sculpin and Amy Huster, broke a bone while training at Newmarket and had to be euthanized. Ridden by amateur Jack Barton, Catlow had won two of his previous starts this month and had been aimed at the Grenfell 3.0 and Newmarket Handicap.

Referendum Defeated After Town Hall Vote Totals

The referendum proposals were overwhelmingly defeated with 12,060 votes for No and 340 for Yes, plus 409 and 29 absent votes recorded for South Forbes and other locations. Informal and absent votes totaled, leaving no majority in favor.

Minister for Lands visits Forbes to aid ex servicemen

R W F Sheahan minister for Lands visited Forbes on a Thursday to advise prospective settlers, especially ex servicemen, on land problems. He met Diggers at the Australia Hotel and attended a council meeting where he discussed closer settlement along the Lachlan, subdivision of Jemalong and Carrawlty estates, irrigation, and the need to protect settlers from unsuitable land. He urged thorough assessments and noted future opportunities for returned soldiers with continued government support.
