Pneumonia Precautions for Pig Raisers in New South Wales

Principal Veterinary Officer Mr M Watts warns pig raisers across New South Wales that pneumonia is common in all districts and year round but risk rises in cold weather. He cites 70 percent mortality at abattoirs and bacon factories and notes healthy pigs can carry mild infections. Unfavorable conditions such as damp low-lying pigsties, inadequate shelter, poor diet, and prolonged draughty transport promote rapid disease spread. Infected pigs should be isolated, advanced cases destroyed and burned, cleanable but non-burnable pens disinfected, yards culled, and the outbreak reported under the Stock Diseases Act. A free treatment leaflet is available from the Department of Agriculture, Box 36, GPO, Sydney.
