Siege of Denain War Report and French Victory Details
A Paris Gazette extract describes Marshal Villars and Count Broglio breaking the Allied lines at Denain on the Scheld near Bouchain and Valenciennes. The French force crossed a difficult Morais, captured wagons and cannon, killed or captured many enemies including the Earl of Albemarle, and took numerous officers and soldiers. Prince Eugene failed to arrive in time. Villars encamped at Denain and prepared bridges over the Sambre. The dispatch also notes the Spanish king's remarks to his Privy Council about peace and future conquests in the Indies and Europe.
