Election of Burgess for Cockermouth Caused Close Poll
June 8 election at Cockermouth for a Burgess to Parliament showed candidates Lord Piercy Seymer and Sir Wilfrid Lawson. Seymer led with 84 votes as Lawson polled London on July 16 amid correspondence between Lord Bishop of Carlisle and Viscount Stanhope detailing objections and defenses related to the contested matter.
