Relieved Castle Action by Dutch Forces at Cardona
Fheroth and Montheéfe Cémiander led volunteers to relieve the castle. On the 20th the forces moved toward Cardona by the Hermitage of la Trinidad. The cavalry under Bator di Espee, with Gesersh Hamilton as volunteer, faced enemy cavalry at St. Juan's Bridge while Count Gowles and 400 Refifers supported by 166 foot and 80 beat battalions pressed towards the Redoubt. Nebot and Geullen advanced on the heights and the main assault broke the enemy lines, capturing a brigadier, then driving the enemy from posts on the hills. By the 21st the detachment reached near the castle, and Nebot secured the Redoubt while Generals Barbieri and Lecheraine pressed the Garrisons of Cardona. The enemy prepared a defense along the Beurial and near Aquarufas. After heavy fighting, our forces routed the enemy, captured colors, and pursued remnants to the river, with significant casualties and prisoners. The day ended with several officers captured or killed and the enemy withdrawing toward Sètonia. The action involved Col. Schonberg, Col. Stashope, and General Nebot, with 200 enemy killed or wounded and many prisoners. The British and French envoys arrived in The Hague, and ministers from Count Zinzendorff and others were briefed.
