Battle on the Scheld Triumph under Marshal Villars
The French army led by Marshal Villars and allies engaged near Arouvy and Scheldt, routing French forces in the village, capturing 400 enemy, and seizing redoubts and bridges. Prince Eugene's pursuing columns retreated to defend Denain as casualties topped 10,000 on the opposing side. Major officers and prisoners of war numbered in the hundreds, with substantial booty and magazines captured or defended along the Scarpe.
