Elizabeth Powell was indicted for assault on Cornelius Courtly on the King's highway on the 17th instant. She seized the watch chain, struck him, and, aided by two other women, took a silver watch from his breeches. A passing constable helped secure her. verdict: guilty.
Samuel Bromley faced a jury for the alleged wilful murder of William Smith at the Marquis of Granby. Evidence showed provocation and a fatal blow with a broom after a shovel thrust, leading to a manslaughter conviction and a nominal one shilling fine. The trial also covered a burglary at Thomas Burnell’s dwelling with three coats, waistcoats, and breeches seized. Jonas Burnell later deemed not guilty after questions of whom to charge.
Elizabeth Cluff was indicted for highway robbery against Levi, stealing his hat valued at 6s 0d and 3s 6d in silver. Levi testified that on the 15th about midnight in a lodging house, she took his hat after promising to return it for a shilling. He followed, paid a shilling, then she retrieved the hat, led him upstairs past seven beds, demanded gin, assaulted him, and she stole 2s 6d from his pocket. The jury found her guilty of theft to the value of 2s 6d.
David White faced a capital charge for falsely assuming the name of Peter Berry, a Hannibal seaman, to claim wages. The case traced Berry’s 1780 enlistment, capture, and death, and White’s steps from in Britain to obtain certificates, paybooks, and sums due, culminating in a guilty verdict by the jury.
In a trial before Justice Heath, Joseph Kingsland and Folm Heils faced highway robbery charges for attacking Andrew Knox on Harrow Weald Common on September 3. Knox, aided by Mr. Wilson, identified Kingsland and Wells at Bow Street, recounting a two minute assault where Wells brandished a pistol and demanded money from Knox, who lost 11 guineas and silver in a purse. witnesses placed Kingsland at the scene, with rain complicating identification.
