Handel and a Violent Orchestral Outburst at a Royal Performance
The account recalls Handels irritable temper during a royal Oratorio scene when the Prince of Wales attended. A discord sparked by mis-timed instruments led Handel to violently lash out, overturning a bass and hurling a kettle drum, then appearing bare headed before the orchestra while the audience laughed. Altogether a lively, chaotic scene amid a later inquest and assorted local crime notices.
