Brief account of the Marquis of Downshire’s family
Moyses Hix, ancestor of the Irish line, went to Ireland with the Earl of Essex in 1573 to quell O’Neill’s rebellion. He served as Governor of Olderfleet Castle near Larne, saved his life in Isle of Magee, and later held Provost Marshal duties at Carrickfergus. He sat for Antrim in 1613 and amassed land in Down and Antrim. His son Arthur led regiments, served Parliament in the 1650s, and supplied 2009 pairs of brogues for Ulster forces. Cromwell granted land, later parts become Hillsborough and Greville. Post-Restoration, he obtained a pardon and Hillsborough’s corporation. William, 1671 patent holder for Lower Iveagh lands. 1676-86 revenue farming. Trevor, Viscount Hillsborough and later Viscount Dungannon, father of the late Marquis and Lady Morea, died in 1742. Four successors served as Governors of Downe.
