Isle of Wight Cowes October 2 Yesterday morning the Tarter Packet attempting to sail for Bengal failed on the road. The vessel bears the insignia of the Bath for Generals Abercrombie and Mepows though Mepows may sail for England first. Detained outward-bound ships finally cleared on the preceding day after contrary winds.
James Horster of Halston Norfolk was robbed of 100 pounds and 24 guineas by a London sharp who posed as a stranger. After a false show of a valuable diamond cross, the pair lured Horster to Black Bull Whitechapel, swindling him to hand over cash and a draft while the con men kept the cross, valued at a few shillings, leaving Horster with the loss.
An 18th century satire by Le Dumourier proclaims equality among French soldiers and offers barber surgeons a per diem share of spoils. It invites barbers from London to recruit by presenting at No 27 Curzon Street May Fair to a mysterious “The alphabet without one letter.”

On Thursday morning about two o'clock a large cotton factory owned by the First Ligntorers and Co. of Choley Lancashire caught fire and was burnt to the ground. The loss is estimated at several thousand pounds.
