An ambitious English Encyclopedia edition arrives in quarto form. It offers 8 volumes or 16 parts, ~400 pages per part, with 20 plates each, priced at 13s 6d in boards or 8d per weekly number. Proprietors tout scholarly editorship, lavish engraving, and expanded content across arts and sciences, aiming for completion in 1801.
Thixday is published in four volumes at 14s in boards. Mc Smith titles include A Family Story in three volumes at 16s sixpence, Men and Manners new edition in four volumes at 14s fourpence, plus The Picture of the Age in two volumes at 7s 3d and The Young Exiles from Genlis in three volumes at 9s 6d. Also advertised are various heraldry and peerage works, and a Bath Chronicle extract noting a cure with Spilsbury’s Antiscorbutic Drops. Public notices describe accommodations for regnant ladies needing retirement and Restorative Sale Pills for female complaints.
LAW REPORT. Nov 28. In a King s Bench sitting Lord Kenyon and Lord Mansfield weigh motions on improvident violations of the laws. The court resolves there is no grounds for judgment and remands the defendant until the 5th day of the next term. Moody v Sheridan involves damages for Drury Lane performances. verdict stands. The King Neale concerns a libel by caricature. defendant discharged under a recognizance. Commons debates include economy, population bill, and bank note issues.
Parliamentary debate on printing the 6th Report and inserting words in the Address. Lords discuss restricting bread use, banning hoarding for pleasure, and a law against gifts of days for pleasure. Lord Camden argues saving from restraint benefits public, while forestallers face public odium. Adjourned to Monday.
