The Bank of England on May 2, 1799 informs persons intending to pay income that payments must be made in Bank of England notes specie or Exchequer Bills issued for the purpose. Payments must be brought by the parties or their agents to an office in Old Broad Street near Winchester Street. R Best, Secretary.
Notice announces the nomination for Governor and Task Master of the House of Correction at Preston. Salary 1701 pounds plus sol. for Task Master. these are the only compensation. Nominations to be made at the General Annual Session in Preston on June 27. Inquiries to Clerk of the Peace or Leigh or Mr Nicholas Grimshaw Preston. Testimonials to Clerk of the Peace. J. It notes editions published at reduced prices, claiming affordability versus other options and listing publishers Cooke in Pattomtter-row and booksellers across Great Britain and Ireland.
A 1790s case reviews damage claimed by the Plaintiff after the Defendant rebuilt and deepened his adjacent foundation. The jury weighs whether harm came from the Defendant’s digging and wall work, the validity of the bricklayer and surveyor bills, and which party bears responsibility for the damage. The Lord Chief Justice instructs three questions: existence of damage, causation by the Defendant, and extent of loss.
A defendant in a civil action over a horse and cart killed the plaintiff’s horse in Enfield. The jury found for the plaintiff, awarding damages of 121 for the horse value, after considering whether the servant’s negligence or an unforeseen accident caused the fatal crash.
A two year old child in Duntiblae died suddenly and was buried with the infant grave. Weeks later a second death occurred in the same family and the first body appeared preserved face downward, prompting thoughts of renewed animation. Lord Oxroxn’s house tale describes a servant, a bank plate, and a butcher’s dog killing the lord’s brother for the plate. A provincial notice warns travellers to guard luggage from one coach to another. The text also notes a general decline in moral conduct and the ease of hemp use.
An alarm report from Tromore states a large ship, possibly a French 6-gun vessel, seen near Duhgarver Heights steering eastward under jury masts. South Devon regiment and cavalry, led by Lord Rotney, were ordered to arms and reconnoitered all night. No vessel found. signals and heightened alert persisted for days. Court Martial proceedings continue. General Roach died recently. Waterford, Mar 10.
New York reports a recent large fire that may not be accidental. The blaze consumed naval materials including carriages for guns and rigging for the armed Government ship buucing on Long Island, delaying protection of commerce.
Old Bailey reports Tuesday verdicts, including an accedary conviction and a James Turnbull escape case. Fines and two year imprisonment in Clerkenwell House of Correction are recorded, with sessions adjourned to Wednesday June 19, as per judge opinions.
A provincial paper reports a new marriage scheme, spreading from London to counties and towns under clerical chaplains. It claims noble titles and a global style, calling itself a nuclear society for matrimonial intercourse and requiring applicants to subscribe and describe themselves with real or fictitious names.
A broad ad like extract from Enwarp Honge late lieutenant of Her Majesty speaks of gratitude for botanical syrup used in India. It claims recovery after naval service, retirement to a farm near Deal, and promotes The Botanical Syrup and Restorative Nervous Cordial with widespread distribution across Britain and Ireland.
