Canterbury receives new troops as 44th Regiment arrives
Thursday and Friday the 44th Regiment of Foot marched into Canterbury and will stay for some time. Detachments from Horse and Foot Artillery, the 7th 17th and 18th Light Dragoons, the 23d and 44th Foot, the WeKent and Hereford Militia, and others from the 55th Foot and Marine Corps compose the present forces. A brigade of seven light companies from Guards and several line regiments is stationed at Canterbury for emergencies. In Lowestoffe a fatal accident occurred during Sea Fencibles drill when a 32 pounder exploded killing Henry Fisher and Robert Fuller and wounding several others. Fuller leaves a widow with child and four other children. Fisher was a single man aiding his parents. A subscription is opened for the widow and family with substantial sums donated.
