A London committee reports on controlling high corn prices and bread costs. It recommends magistrates’ powers to prohibit selling bread below whole meal standards and to limit bran content for a temporary period. It urges public notice and local baker regulation within magistrates jurisdictions.
Philadelphia January traces a House debate on restraining foreign ships to admit only domestic growth and manufacture, with a plan to refer the measure to a Committee of the Whole. A Lancaster seat relocation bill gains passage in the state House, 39 to 36, to move government offices to Lancaster until a permanent seat is chosen.
Charles Baldwin files a suit against Richard Oliver Jr for criminal conversation with Olivia Baldwin. Evidence includes Mr B’s alleged cruelty and alleged affair witnesses, a marriage record, and testimonies from multiple locals. Jury returns a verdict for the plaintiff with significant damages.
An 18th century record shows a damages case where a 17 year old girl was seduced, leading to pregnancy and social ruin. The defendant, son of a farmer, had two years of courtship. witnesses claim fidelity though pregnancy ended visits. The seditious indictment against Baker ended with a Not Guilty verdict by the jury.
The eminent writer Dr Young, famed for urbanity, faced a violent royalist challenge after pleasing ladies with a flute tune aboard a pleasure boat to Vauxhall. An officer demanded he stop, threatening a duel. Young refused, then challenged the officer to a sword fight but produced a pistol and forced a dance, forcing a truce and lasting friendship thereafter.
The plaintiff Thomas Fydell sues to recover 4309 for discounted bills from Horlock and Co bankers who later became bankrupt. The case centers on whether Fydell may recover for bills he paid that proved unproductive. The judge notes if Fydell took bills while negotiable, he must show they were in Horlock and Co possession with full consent that they would be repaid if nonproductive.
Proceedings detail a divorce suit by M S Coets against her husband for cruelty and adultery. Witnesses allege long marriage, two children, his mistreatment after an affair with Miss Brown, including sexual misconduct and violence. Plea of recrimination failed. Judge grants sentence for support. Also notes a Paris observation map of French departments and promotions in colonial forces, plus two death sentences at Earl Grinstead and commutations.
