Ormond Earldom Claim in Irish Lords Debate
In the Irish House of Lords on Thursday the 17th the claim of John Butler to the Earldom of Ormond was reviewed. The Lord Chancellor opined that the Act of Attainder against the late Duke of Ormond was not an Act of the Irish King and Parliament and predates the Declaratory Act of George I to assert British parliamentary authority over Ireland. The Lord Chancellor urged judges’ opinion if doubt remained and noted that England’s Parliament after the declaratory act also Renunciation Act aimed to end Irish legislative independence. He recalled that 1783 Irish enactments did not adopt Ormonde’s attainder. A resolution affirming Butler’s clear claim passed without dissent and will be sent to England for the king’s approval.
