Budget Substitutes Curb Deficit In House Debate
In a June 30 session the Lords deferred judgment in the appeal from the Court of Session, while the Commons discussed the East India Judicature Bill and major budget measures. The Chancellor outlined substitutes for a 660,000l deficit, proposing taxes on parcels, inland navigation, newspaper ads, transfers of property, and a duty on horses in agriculture, plus stamp duties on weights and measures and a refined tobacco and liquor plan to balance the revenue.
