Remarkable hailstorm damages Lewes and surrounding district
On June 11 a fierce storm of rain hail thunder and lightning terrified Lewes and nearby towns. Stones four to seven inches ripped glass shattered windows and damaged crops with peas fields nearly ruined. A field near Southover lost much of its crop and Mr Durrant faced heavy losses. Four sheep died for Mr Chambers and several residents were lightly struck. A loud explosion followed the hail, possibly a nitrosulphurous air burst, with barometer unchanged and thermometer showing variation. A robin built a nest in Horsham Commons and remained undisturbed until curtain removal.
