Sugar brokers face case over pledge of Jamaica sugars
In Northampton 1793 a jury heard a dispute over 34 hogsheads of Jamaica sugar shipped for a plantation owner. Factor Boyne borrowed funds from brokers Knowlys using the sugar as security, while Knowlys contended they acted as brokers and the funds were advanced to Boyne, not the principal. The court weighed factor authority, broker pledges, and ownership as the case hinged on whether the brokers rightfully pledged the goods for the money advanced.
