Egyptian Finance Losses Under French Occupation Reflect Hard Times
An excerpted letter from the French administrator general in Egypt to the executive directory details financial strain after Napoleon’s departure. It cites extraordinary taxes, confiscations, and a failed appeal for aid, noting continued levies on commerce, land, and villagers. The army’s decimated strength, widespread disease, and lack of external support push France toward abandoning Egypt or facing British expulsion. The letter condemns Egyptian slowness in paying debts and laments perceived ingratitude of locals amid hardship.
