In Newcastle on Monday at about 3 o clock the Rectory caught fire inflicting major damage to the building but saving most of the furniture thanks to neighbours. The Rev Barrington suspects the blaze started during a visit to reading in bed. In Bath a coachman William Petty drowned after a carriage and horses were let loose into the river near the Old Bridge. In Southampton a ferryman’s boat sank while crossing Hamble Ferry. a young man drowned and a passenger was saved. The ferryman’s habit of carrying a horse in a small boat is blamed for the accident.
