In a heated assembly 539 members voted for a president with 297 backing M Emmery. Mirabeau, seeking to provoke action, failed to secure a speech from Scritbery or the ex president and the ceremony was abolished. Abbe Aalartie sought to retract an oath previously taken. Abbe Gregoire offered a conciliatory speech amid mixed reception. Mirabeau suggested oath accessions be conditional, ecclesiastics may take or lose office based on oath acceptance. A printer’s error on a bill was noted. The bishop of Clermont and other clergy refused the oath. The assembly then decided to call clerics by names but proceed in general terms to require the civic oath amid ongoing tumult.

The plot centers on a widow doomed by Bramins and rescued by Christian soldiers as a ceremonial funeral pile proceeds. Critics praised some originality, noted the three act piece as costly to mount, and commented on costumes, stage effect, and performances including Miss Brunton, Mr Horeman, Mrs Rock, Mr Farren, and a marching procession with a Chinese style bridge and cocoa-nut oil styling.
