Law Report Leathuen and Chater v Becket at Guildhall
The case before Lord Kenyon ended in the plaintiffs being non suited after a lengthy hearing. Harris owed Chater and Leathley, now deceased, and a Bankruptcy Commission had been pursued. The defendant, a Harris friend, offered to settle by paying ten pence in the pound and accepting bills. The plaintiff sought expenses from the defendant for creditor meetings and commissions, and after the defendant promised to cover those costs, the plaintiff accepted the terms. The defendant later disputed the amount and paid the bill, then faced action to recover these promised expenses. The ground of the nonsuit was stated as the defendant’s promise to pay the plaintiff’s costs for Harris’s defense.

Criminal Information sought against Middlesex magistrate
Lord Kenyon grants a rule to show cause why a criminal information should not be filed against Justice Spiller for gross conduct in handling felonys cases. The motion cites improper influence by a solicitor, withholding original examinations, and replacing signed records with unsigned versions to aid prosecution in a Grand Junction Canal Company matter. The matter centers on alleged obstruction of justice and misuse of official duty at Brentford and in Warwickshire affairs.
