Murder at Sea Trial at Old Bailey Ends with Guilty Verdict
At the Admiralty Sessions in Old Bailey on December 10 1798 William Searle Thomas Potter and Thomas Ventin faced trial for the murder of Humphrey Lynn aboard the Lottery during a Smuggling confrontation off Cornwall. Roger Toms testified that Searle and the others fired as the Lottery fled. Searle and Ventin were sentenced to death and the court adjourned to May.
