Riots in Liverpool Quieted by Civil Guards and Patrols
In Liverpool on August 29 the mob stayed quiet through Saturday night and Sunday but work was protected by civil power. About six o'clock near the Custom-house workers returned to docks under guard. A ringleader was fired upon and jailed. By noon rumors of approaching rioters spread. troops and special constables mobilized, shops shut, but about 150 rioters, many women and children, dispersed peacefully. Lord Pembroke's Dragoons arrived and more troops expected. 300 peace officers sworn in. Rioters damaged tools of those at work and roving bands persisted but patrols set for the night. Peace may take time to fully restore.
