Court hears breach of promise case over aged widow

A jury heard Mr. Shawe sue for 5 000 pounds in a breach of promise of marriage to Mrs. Baker, an elderly widow. Evidence showed alleged fraud, a transfer of wealth, and disputes over the contract’s validity with testimony from counsel, a physician, and a servant. The judge and jury weighed morality, property, and fitness for marriage in delivering verdicts and comments.

Marriage contract barred by disease claims in trial

The court comments on how acts of matrimony may fail if either party suffers mental or bodily illness. Dr. Squire and a maid servant testified that even if the marriage had occurred it might be dissolved. The jury, after a five hour trial, found for the Defendant as the Count’s audience looked on from a crowded county venue. Ladies from the county attended but were asked to withdraw due to the case’s delicate topics.
